The Sepal, Stem & Leaves: #3 |
Now
lets move on to the Sepal and Stem.Lets start by choosing our colors, this is always a huge challenge for me due to my being color blind, so if you see I have lemon yellow and purple as my differing shades somewhere, be kind to me. Okay back to business: I am choosing #43b92b for stroke & #1F5414 as my fill. Now select the rounded rectangle preset retain style unchecked create as vector an anti-alias checked. Lay down a long not too wide rectangle. Select the pen tool again and enter node edit mode and drag the 2nd pair of nodes from the top down a bit like the image. Then with the 3rd set of nodes from the top, drap upwards. Finally move one of the very bottom nodes up at an angle to give the impression that the stem has been cut with a knife. You can also move a few of the nodes to give the stem a bent appearance, but that is not mandatory. Now, lets convert that layer to a raster and using our handy dandy selection tool trick, lets get those marching ants busy! Going down the center of the stem at random spots lightly hit the inside with your airbrush and the light shade of green, now Ctrl + D to deselect. |
go to Effects 3D Effects Inner Bevel and lets hit that stem with an inner
bevel, here are the settings I used. Looks good donut? Okay now lets get
that smudge tool busy and start shaping our sepal and lets not forget
the thorns we will shape them from the stem with our smudge tool as well.
Once you are happy with this, use the soften tool to tone it down a bit.
That does a great job of blending the colors in the stem. |
That
does a great job of blending the colors in the stem. Your stem / sepal
should be looking similar to this now. See and you added the thorns too,
gosh you guys RAWK!! |
|
Now
this should be old hat, pen tool\edit mode and lets shape our leaf. Using
the pen tool I ran a selection around the 2 side nodes and then moved
them down a bit, this gave me the teardrop shape. Then moving one of the
handles in on the top node gave me my final shape. |
Once
again lets convert to raster this is old hat now too ennit? Lets get those
marching ants back up there again and start to airbrush our lighter shade
of green around the edges. When you are satisfied, once again deflect
by hitting the Ctrl & D keys. It looks good, but we can sure make
it look better. Using the ellipse selection tool lay down an ellipse shape.
Now choose the move tool and while holding down the right mouse button,
move the ellipse so that it covers the center of your leaf, See example
now select your airbrush & drop the brush size to between 5 and 10
and choose a darker shade of green, begin to spray from outside of the
ellipse into the other side. Hit Ctrl & D to deselect again. |
This gives the leaf some dimension and shadow. Now randomly hit the leaf
with the lighten\darken tool alternating as you go, this gives a variegated
look, now hit it with the soften tool again. Use the smudge tool once
again <same settings as before> and go along the center line of
dark green you added, your leaf should now look similar to the example
here. Now just duplicate leaves as needed and position them into place
to finish off your lovely creation. |
Your
finished Rose may look something like this, or it may not :) that's okay
too. Hey Might be a good idea to tube this bugger, I'd hate for you to
have to recreate it all over again. |
| I hope you have enjoyed my first dip into the tutorial waters. I hope it was informative, clear, easy to follow and most of all I hope you had fun. |
